Hosting FAQ
10.29.03 (9:57 am)   [edit]
For those of you that are new to the web host scene, here is a quick FAQ that will give you the basics:
Hosting FAQHosting FAQ
Apache: One of the world's most popular Web server programs, Apache was built by a group of open-source programmers and is often used because of its outstanding performance, strong security features and the fact that it is free.
Bandwidth: The amount of data that can be transmitted at a given moment to a server. The higher your bandwidth, the larger amount of traffic your site can handle at one time.
CGI: Short for Common Gateway Interface, a small script that processes data taken from the user (such as from a form application).
Co-located hosting: This hosting option gives webmasters complete control over their server. You are responsible for providing the physical hardware and network administration; the hosting company will provide you with the rack space and Internet connection.
Dedicated hosting: A hosting feature that allows a Web site to have its own server.
FTP: Short for File Transfer Protocol, a method of allowing remote users and Web servers to exchange files.
Managed hosting: A dedicated server that is accompanied by a full suite of technical support, maintenance and monitoring services.
Name server: A server responsible for translating domain names and IP addresses.
Propagation: The process where name servers throughout the Internet add new domains and remove expired ones from their records. This can be a lengthy process, which is why connecting to a new domain name can often take three or four days.
Reseller: A reseller operates components of a Web hosting operation using services, infrastructure and equipment provided by another Web hosting service.
Shared hosting: The most basic of Web hosting types. With shared hosting, numerous Web sites are shared on one server.
SSL: Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape to handle and protect confidential/sensitive information required for e-commerce transactions (like credit card numbers).
Subdomain: Typically known as a "domain within a domain", subdomains are individual Web addresses built upon a pre-existing domain name (such as clientname.yourhostingcompany.com).
Telnet: A command-line interface that allows remote users and Web servers to communicate.

Ok, so that wasn't too quick but hopefully it was helpful.

HostRocket.com
10.29.03 (8:55 am)   [edit]
 Host Rocket is one of the bigger players in the hosting game. They have shared plans, dedicated servers, and even free hosting accounts. They also have a new feature called rollover bandwidth that allowes you to rollover your unused bandwidth month to month.

Their plans start at $9.99 a month which gets you 1000 mb's of space and 50 gigs of bandwidth and their dedicated servers start at $115 a month. Their free hosting includes a subdomain, 25 mb's of space, and 2 gigs of bandwidth. Not to mention they have one of the best designs I have seen for any host. 8)

What to Look for In A Host...
10.28.03 (5:06 pm)   [edit]
 Here are a few things that I feel are important when choosing a host besides the amount of space and bandwidth they offer:

-Price
-Support
-SSI
-PHP/MYSQL
-Uptime
-Extensive FAQ's
-Money Back Gurantee
-No Setup Fee
-Customer Opinions
-Professionalism

Take into account all of those variables anytime you are comparing webhost.

iNetter.net
10.28.03 (3:14 pm)   [edit]

-1000 mb of space
-50 gigs of data transfer
-Unlimited email accounts
-Instant Activation

and all for only $6.95 a month. However, I do not know the reputation of this host, but they seem to be a reputable company thats worth a try. If you have any experience with this host, please email me at mshelton1984@yahoo.com or post a comment.

UPDATE:
Friday, November 07, 2003
iNetter.net has raised their prices from $4.99 to $6.95 a month.
